Do you ever wonder what the 4- or 5-digit PLU numbers on your produce means? Here’s a little breakdown:
- 4 digits, beginning with a 3 or 4 – Conventionally grown
- 5 digits, beginning with a 9 – Organic produce
- 5 digits, beginning with an 8 (very rare) – Genetically modified/engineered (GE) produce

Bonus supermarket knowledge:
Many ’store brands’ are made by the national brand, but at a lower cost. Choose the ’store brand’ to save money.
Membership/discount cards are used to track your buying habits, not to give you lower prices. (I love Krieger – no discount cards!)

Good information Terra. Just this morning when I went to the store to get pancake flour I was thinking about the discounts and cards. All the time and money the stores must spend to have someone do the markdowns, create the tags, place the tags and then change the price in the computer so they ring out right. Then generate the discount cards for the customers to have to dig out everytime they go to the store. I bet I have over 20 just ‘discount’ cards for different stores. Almost every store has one now, card, pet, office supplies and food. Just give me the discount and forget all the headache causing game playing. *end daydream, time to dig out my card.*

If you do the self-scanning checkout lines, you can use whatever card you want. I’ve tried it – grocery stores accept pet store cards, etc. Works every time.
I have never gotten any discount from my Petsmart card. I’m glad I found healthier cat food at Mustard Seed – it even costs $2 less than the Petsmart brand. No discount card needed and the pieces of food are so small that my cat can’t chomp them into bits and leave them all over the floor for me to pick up, like he did with the old food.
